to announce...
Ice Cane
Bamboo Ice Fishing
Rods
C&G
Fly Rods is proud to possibly be the first, and only manufacturer to
offer bamboo ice fishing rods. We love ice fishing and thought - "how
cool would it be to develop an ice fishing rod from bamboo."
Let's face it, not much thought or attention is given to ice fishing rods.
The aesthetics range from ordinary to down-right ugly! Ice
Cane bamboo ice fishing rods are by no means ordinary or
ugly. They are incredibly detailed works of art - an heirloom-quality
fishing rod. When you own one of these rods, there is no doubt you will
have the best-looking, most desirable rod on the ice! They are even multi-functional
- use them for crappie, walleye, or perch jigging from a boat or dock in the
summer.
These rods are not modified fly
fishing tapers. We spent many months of trial and error developing unique
tapers for ice fishing. We then made special planing forms to manufacture
these rods. In the photos, you will notice a much more radical
swelled-butt in front of the grip. This
keeps the tip smaller for more sensitivity, but allows the grip area to be
larger for more strength. We also spent considerable time researching,
lab-testing, and field testing these rods to prove out not only the tapers, but
adhesives and finishes. These require special attention due to the
drastic changes in temperatures (going from a warm vehicle to extreme cold on
the ice). We finally found an epoxy and polyurethane finish that performs
flawlessly in these conditions, as well as prolonged exposure to cold temps.
Even
though ice fishing rods are not cast like a typical rod, we apply to same attention to detail that
goes into our fly rods. We start with Tonkin Cane, precisely planed with
no glue lines showing. The nodes are staggered perfectly, guide whippings
are flawless, premium cork is used for the grip, and polished aluminum slip
rings are included
with walnut fore and aft caps. Rods are individually serial-numbered for
traceability, and the owners name can be applied - like fly rods - if
desired. The walnut butt cap is removable to allow the slip rings to be
removed in case the owner desires to tape the reel to the handle (something some
ice fishermen like to do). The rods are designed to function best with
spinning reels, but others should work as well. Ice
Cane comes in 3 sizes:
-
28" Light
-
30" Medium
-
32" Heavy
How
do they perform? Just like bamboo fly rods are different from graphite,
bamboo ice fishing rods are also different. The "action" of the
rods is slower (using fly rod terminology), i.e. the rod will flex deeper.
It is just not practical to plane the bamboo small enough to allow for
the ultra-sensitive tip action like some graphite rods have. But, we have
noticed the bamboo transmits the vibrations from very fine bites - like walleye
or crappie - very well. In other words, it is very easy to detect these
bites in the grip, even with gloves on. Now, we would not recommend the
heavy rods for large fish like pike or lake trout - although we have never had
one break. A good recommendation is as follows:
-
use the 28" Light for -
Bluegill/Crappie (2-4 lb. line)
-
use the 30" Medium for -
Perch (4-6 lb. line)
-
use the 32" Heavy for -
Walleye (4-8 lb. line)
